PFUJ condoles demise of Abdul Hameed Chapra

ISLAMABAD—Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has condoled the demise of veteran journalist Abdul Hameed Chapra in Karachi on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.

PFUJ President Shehzada Zulfiqar and Secretary-General Nasir Zaidi while recalling Chapra’s services for press freedom and the journalist community said he was an iconic figure.

“He was a vocal advocate for the independence of the press and freedom of speech and expression. Because of this he faced hardships and remained in jail during the 1978 movement for freedom of the press during the dictatorship of General Zia Ul Haq.

Chapra was a former PFUJ and Karachi Press Club, president.

The PFUJ leadership said his service and life was a beacon for today’s journalists, particularly the younger lot.
